The repair of the “Broken Bridge” was a project that the Mid-Snake RC&D was involved in in 2023. It has been a signature part of the canyon for many years but was not usable for many years. The “Broken Bridge” is located in Snake River Canyon Park between Auger Falls and Yingst Grade connecting Jerome and Twin Falls Counties together. It was originally used to haul gravel out of the canyon for the construction of I-84 but was broken and unused for 50 years after the work needed for I-84 was complete. Many members of the community have asked for the bridge to be fixed to connect the two counties and allow for a large loop for recreation, but funding delayed the project many times. In 2019, the project was approved for funding, but soon after COVID delayed the project once again.

In 2023, the Snake River Canyon Park began lobbying to have the project completed. The estimated total cost of the project was $157,800 and many entities came together to make it happen. The funding for the “Broken Bridge” was provided by the Jerome County ARPA, Mid-Snake RC&D, Twin Falls City, Southern Idaho Legacy Trails, and Southern Idaho Tourism.
After funding was obtained, construction began by Wolftone Construction in August 2023. Along with a great ramp for both hikers and bikers, a key part of the construction was railing that was designed to fold down during high waters as damage was a concern. By allowing the water to wash over the bridge without resistance keeps the bridge intact and keeps debris moving down the river instead of getting stuck on the bridge. After the bridge was completed and concern regarding drowning risks during high run off, signs were added that read: DANGER HIGH WATER POSSIBLE CROSS AT OWN RISK.

The “Broken Bridge” was completed on December 11, 2023. It’s completion makes the hiking loop a total of 13 miles between the Jerome and Twin Falls counties. An estimated 80 people use the bridge every day, and outdoor enthusiasts have been pleased with the results. If you haven’t visited the area, we highly recommend it to get outside and see the historical sites along the way.
